Striker F.C V u18 AJ Marquez and Ivan Esparza Sign to play at Mesa State College.

The next couple commitments for the 2010 recruiting class come from Las Cruces, New Mexico.  The Mavs recently signed New Mexico Strikers teammates AJ Marquez and Ivan Esparza.  AJ is a versatile midfielder/defender that has a great work rate and attitude.  He was All-State at Mayfield High School where he was teammates with present Mav Brandon Burton.  AJ was also MVP of the state tournament as a junior as Mayfield made a run to the state high school championship game.  "AJ is very strong on the ball and makes great decisions.  He has a very nice touch and his versatility will help him compete for a number of positions next fall."

Ivan Esparza becomes the sixth addition to the Mavs fall 2010 roster.  Ivan is a forward/midfielder from Las Cruces High School where he was All-State.  "Ivan is one of those players who scores goals.  Every time I watch him he impresses me more and more.  He has a knack for scoring goals and he is determined to win.  He is built like a bull and provides the ability to hold the ball for us or take on defenders.  He is going to be a great addition for our program."

MSC Men Open Spring Season against BYU

The Mesa State Men’s Soccer Team opened their spring season against BYU Saturday at Walker Field.  The two teams played two games with BYU winning the first 3-0 and the second 2-1.

BYU started off fast by taking a 2-0 lead in the first half off of two miss cleared balls by the Mesa State defenders.   The first goal came after Mesa State pressured the BYU backs with Ben Medina and Brandon Burton turning their defenders and creating good scoring opportunities.  A few seconds later a well placed cross by Andy Cornia was cleared out for a corner.  On the ensuing corner BYU counter attacked and a miss cleared ball landed at the feet of a BYU forward and he finished it from 12 yards away.

The game was very physical in the first half.  The possession was pretty even and scoring chances were few for both sides.  BYU doubled their lead when a tough back pass forced Goalkeeper Billy Martinez into a difficult clearance that landed at the feet of a BYU player 30 yards from goal.  He quickly played the ball to a forward standing right in front of the goal where he redirected the ball for a 2-0 lead at halftime.

The second half saw BYU carry more of the possession but create only a few goal scoring chances.  Mesa State’s lack of match fitness was evident, but the boys played tough in this very physical game.  A third goal late gave the Cougars the 3-0 lead to put the match away.

In the second game the Cougars were able to jump on Mesa State 2-0 and could have cruised to the victory, but a change in the momentum at half time energized the Mavericks as they pressured BYU the entire half.  Goal scoring opportunities by Danny Westcott and Skylar Roy were turned away by the Cougars goalkeeper.  John Vaccaro was very strong on the flank beating his defender and serving balls throughout the half.  Finally, the Mavs broke their goal scoring drought when Danny Westcott was put through on a breakaway from senior Tyler Amerman and finished his chance.  The Mavs pressured to the end but were unable to get the equalizer.

Overall it was a good start to the spring season.  The boys were very competitive against a top rated team like BYU.  The Mavs hit the field again against RMAC foe Adams State on April 3rd with kick off at 6PM at Walker Field.

Assistant Coach Kike Lara and Dayton Soccer Team Assists In Development Of Young Players In Trotwood

Oct. 27, 2009

DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's soccer team has recently wrapped up a series of volunteer experiences with young soccer players in Trotwood, Ohio. The Flyers volunteered once a week for six weeks over the fall helping the players better learn the game of soccer.

The soccer program began this experience after being contacted by a mother whose daughters had attended the UD Soccer Academy in the summer. She was affiliated with the Board Members of Trotwood Say Soccer and felt a need for some help with their teams. She emailed the men's soccer staff explaining their need and they were more than happy to lend a helping hand.

During their volunteer time various coaches and players would instruct the young players on the game. The Flyers would work on fundamentals and attempt to build a base for the young athletes to grow on. The players would adapt their instruction to account for the various talent levels of each child and would also keep things entertaining and fun for all the players involved.

"Things become very serious here during the season and this was a good opportunity for the guys to just let loose and have a good time," said assistant coach Kiki Lara. "The players get to see the city that they represent and get a chance to remember what is truly important here." Overall the coaches felt like this was a great experience for the children as well as for the Flyer players.
